Contrast gives depth to a space. Old and new, full and empty, light and shadow, refined and humble - such oppositions create tension and clarity. Rather than resolving these differences, we allow them to remain visible. Their interaction brings character and structure to an interior.
Balance gives structure to an interior. Architecture, nature, and art are brought into relation, shaping spaces that are varied yet coherent. Within a single home, expressive rooms may sit beside quieter ones, each responding to a different use while contributing to the whole. Harmony emerges not from uniformity, but from proportion, light, and carefully chosen materials.
Art gives identity to an interior. It introduces atmosphere, rhythm, and focus. Whether quietly integrated or given prominence, artworks bring specificity to a space and connect the interior to broader cultural and personal contexts.
Daily life gives purpose to a home. Some spaces invite gathering, others allow retreat. Each has its role, yet all belong to a coherent whole. The aim is a home that feels calm, clear, and adaptable - shaped by light, material, and the patterns of everyday living.
Born in the Netherlands, Bernard has been driven from an early age by a desire to create objects that combine beauty with function. His path into interior design has taken him from his studies in engineering at the University of Twente to participation in international art exhibitions, and later to a master’s degree at London’s Royal College of Art.
This artistic background continues to shape his sensitivity to colour, composition, and the careful curation of objects, and informs the overall balance and composition of the rooms he designs.
He also plays a key role in the development of bespoke furniture pieces designed for Ter Hoeven Design interiors, from the sculptural Trellis Chair to the ingenious dining table concealed within the TV wall of a Battersea living room.
An interest in craftsmanship, materials, and technical solutions leads Bernard to work closely with construction teams to ensure that each project is realised with precision and care.
With a university background in the humanities and later experience as a business coach, Tanya brings a strong appreciation for collaboration and clear communication to her work.
Her work with artists and involvement in organising exhibitions first introduced her to the creative world and eventually led her to pursue a degree in interior design.
At Ter Hoeven Design, Tanya is closely involved in the development of design concepts and spatial solutions across projects. She particularly enjoys helping clients imagine the full potential of their homes, translating ideas into practical solutions even where an existing layout presents challenges.
Her strong software skills allow her to create detailed visualisations using ArchiCAD, SketchUp, Photoshop, and other 3D tools. At Ter Hoeven Design, these visualisations play an integral role in the design process, enabling clients to understand a project clearly and see their future home from every angle.
